In the Unrelated Word Pairing test, a researcher administering the test trains the subject by reading 7 pairs of unrelated words in sequence. Then the subject must recall the second word from each pair when prompted with the first word by the researcher.

When administering the Unrelated Words Test, encourage subjects to form a memorable association between the words. Answer any questions the subject has before beginning the test, explaining that once underway you won't be giving additional instructions and that you are preparing the subject to interact with the computerized testing system.

The same 7 word pairs are re-trained and tested 6 times. Generally with increasing performance across trials. The total score out of 42, number of trials needed to successfully recall 7 pairs, and performance on the third trial are valuable measures of performance.

fMRI Version

In the functional MRI version of this task, word pairs are presented on screen with simultaneous audio to the subject using Macstim Carbon. Also, subjects do not verbalize their results, instead the subject uses a MR safe button box to give their responses. Subjects provide a yes/no response whether or not they can recall the second word in the pair. This puts subjects on the honor system, but they can be pre-tested on the word pairs after the scan to add reliability to the results. It is best to explain to subjects that they are not being graded on their performance and that they should answer honestly and do their best.
