If your having weird disk behavior it's always a good idea to run a disk integrity check. In OSX, this is extremely easy:
- Open Finder and go to /Applications/Utilities
- Click on "Disk Utility"
- Select the Disk of interest
- Click the button labeled "Verify Disk"
- If any errors are found, click the button labeled "Repair Disk"
Sometimes the permissions on system files gets out of sync too. To return OSX to it's default permissions:
- Open Finder and go to /Applications/Utilities
- Click on "Disk Utility"
- Select your main disk (Usually Macintosh HD)
- Click the button labeled "Repair Disk Permissions"
