New page

Lab computing work is done through these primary channels:
*  Group resource lab computers
* The Hoffman2 campus computing cluster
*  Personal computers

Let's cover each in more detail and explain how you can gain access to them.

Group Resource Lab Computers
These are computers available for reservation by anyone in the lab, though they are generally reserved for SRPs.

Access
In order to log into these computers, you need a lab account. Request one by sending an email to [mailto:support@ccn.ucla.edu support@ccn.ucla.edu] with the following information:
:Subject
::
Lab Account Request

:Body
::
Name:    first and last

::
Email: your preferred email for correspondence

::
Phone: phone number you can be reached at

::
AIM: chat accounts you can be contacted through

::
Project: which project you will be working on, or which lab member will be guiding your work

::
Year: what year you're currently in school?

::
Google Email: this is needed to add you to the Google Calendars for reserving computer time

When you account is created, you will be sent a confirmation email with instructions on how to log in.

Reservations
Computer seats are limited, so usage is regulated by a reservation system. When a member joins the lab, they will be added to a set of Google Calendars through which they can reserve time on a lab computer. Remember, a reservation is no good if you don't have a lab account to log in with.

Hoffman2
Read all about this fancy and powerful UCLA campus computing cluster here. Only the first section is required reading for new lab members, the rest is intended to be useful reference material.

In the Hoffman2 section, you will find details about how to get your own account on the cluster and what you need to do to login and use the tools on it.

Please remember that Hoffman2 is a resource maintained by UCLA ATS. If you are experiencing trouble with the system:
# first refer to their FAQ
# and if your problem or question persists, email their support team at [mailto:atshpc@ucla.edu atshpc@ucla.edu]

The CCN Admins do maintain the FMRI software tools on Hoffman2, so if your problem is related to those tools you can email [mailto:support@ccn.ucla.edu support@ccn.ucla.edu] with questions.

Personal Computers
Nothing is preventing you from working on a personal computer for lab work. There are various software packages you may need to install to make your computer useful like FSL, MATLAB, Python, FreeSurfer, OsiriX, Diffusion Toolkit and TrackVis.

The sysadmins can provide limited support to personal computers. It never hurts to ask, but personal computers are primarily the responsibility of their owners.

It is also important to recognize requirements regarding patient data. You should never store patient data on a personal computer or an unencrypted drive as this breaks HIPAA regulations for security.
